“There are three outcomes for any startup. The first is being bought, the second is going public, and the third is going bankrupt. As long as we avoid the third one, it’s a pretty good outcome.”
The Brief
In 2023, after years of making short-form content professionally, I challenged myself to tell a longer story. Having worked at PillPack during its journey from startup to acquisition, I knew TJ’s story firsthand. But instead of telling the story of how PillPack was built, I wanted to explore what happens after you've already won.
The Challenge
Making the video was only half the challenge. The other half was getting people to watch it. Without paid distribution or sponsorship, the launch relied entirely on a trailer and TJ’s own promotion. The goal wasn't simply to earn views—it was to convince people to leave their social feed and watch an 8-minute video.
The Approach
Because of my unique relationship with TJ and his family, our three-person crew was welcomed into their home in Park City. We followed life as it unfolded—from breakfast with the kids to conversations with fellow founders—capturing the moments that don't usually make it into founder stories.
The Results
In its first week, the documentary achieved an 83% view rate, with viewers watching an average of 4 minutes and 20 seconds of the 8-minute film and generating nearly 33 hours of total watch time. the project proved to me that I'm capable of creating the kind of longer-form documentary work I hope to make more of.
